Born 204 years ago, she could have been a pampered lady of high society, but instead Florence Nightingale chose to devote herself to nursing and the nursing profession in a time when it was low-ranked and poorly valued. Nightingale has greatly influenced nurses’ position through their education and as such has played an important role in making nurses a crucial part of the healthcare system in general. Today, it’s a matter of pride for each of us to say:
I AM A NURSE.
Not only because of Florence Nightingale, her teaching and her ideas. Also because of nursing’s rich history in guarding our society’s health and wellbeing. They do so with their diverse knowledge and experience, of illness and care, of work and organization. Nurses have served on the frontlines in wars, pandemics and disasters. In times of need for help, we are there with pride and enthusiasm and most importantly HOPE. Therefore, dear colleagues, be proud to be a nurse, of yourselves, on your accomplishments and hard work, and your courage –
HAPPY INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY!
